Waterfront Bliss in Key Biscayne

I drove over the impressive Rickenbacker Causway from Miami on the Florida coast to explore the barrier island of Key Biscayne (Spanish: Cayo Vizcaíno) with its beautiful beaches, secluded private moorings and luxury villas.

I could well imagine sitting back on the deck or in the gazebo of my waterfront home, with my yacht moored out front and my golf cart parked alongside my limousine in the garage, enjoying the view across the turquoise waters of Hurricane Harbor Bay. Far beyond this idyllic, peaceful scene, the contrasting skyscrapers and skyline of Downtown Miami are just visible on the horizon. It is a lifestyle I could get used to.

A Winter’s Tale

On a Christmas Eve past, the skies were clear with just a few fluffy clouds and a flurry of snow lay on the hills, so I set off to pretty Lake Rieg, one of my favourite haunts south of Munich. Located near the picturesque Bavarian town of Murnau.

As the sun set behind me the frozen lake and snow-covered alpine landscape were bathed in a warm light. Crispy frozen snowflakes stood out pale pink against the smooth blue ice of the lake.

Nearby, families were skating and sledging, laughing and chatting, enjoying the last moments of light before heading home to their yuletide festivities.

Remote Port Ness Beach

The north west of the Outer Hebridean Isle of Lewis is unique and very remote. I can assure you the journey along single track roads from Stornoway is well worth it. Make sure to explore Port Ness Beach, where towering rocks meet the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

Even if the local school children were having their summer sports day and some were evening swimming in the sea nearby, I recommend you wrap up well against the winds and weather!

This sandy beach with rugged rocks and cliffs is the perfect backdrop for a breathtaking Atlantic seascape. Port Ness (Nis in Gaelic), Isle of Lewis (Eilean Leòdhais), Scotland.

Beautiful Baltic Dusk

Early January and it was chilly with frost at night and the occasional flurry of snow. But the early dusk meant I could enjoy breathtaking moments like this as the last rays of sun on the horizon lit up the Baltic Sea in the Greifswalder Bodden.

I dressed up in my woolly hat, long-john thermal underwear, fingerless-gloves and cozy, waterproof boots and crouched down on the pebbly shore to capture this view across the bay from the village of Klein Zicker on the Mönchsgut peninsula in the south of the island of Ruegen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany.

Magnificent West Sands

I stepped down onto the untamed West Sands Beach and breathed in the salty sea air. It was perfect weather for a stroll as the waves washed against the Scottish North Sea coast. The cloud-kissed horizon and the pristine shoreline made it an unforgettable experience.

St Andrews, with its university and historic old town, is the perfect destination for a day trip or holiday. Take time to enjoy the stunning beaches and explore the fascinating town, castle and abbey ruins and picturesque harbour. Maybe even sign up for a round of golf on the famous golf course. Or take along your bucket and spade and build sandcastles.

Golden Amber Moments

I strolled down to the harbour on a wonderfully warm evening in early June and was rewarded with this stunning view of the traditional houses along the shore, bathed in the golden rays of the evening sun – not at all stormy as it looks!

I was accompanied in the distance by a live band playing modern Scottish music at the Annual whisky feis (festival).

You just have to ignore the midges who want to be part of the scene:-/

River Severn in the Spotlight

The River Severn Estuary shines as if lit from within, reflecting the golden glow of the sun, with the original Severn Bridge and the Severn Second Crossing peeking through the mist.

I captured this breathtaking view from high above the world, on a plane from London to the USA. Lucky passengers like me caught a glimpse of this special moment when the clouds parted to reveal a heavenly scene.

Enchanting Medieval Regensburg

This medieval gem is well worth a visit when exploring Bavaria, whether by car or on a Danube cruise. Immerse yourself in the charming and richly historical old town of Regensburg with its vibrant colours and fascinating history. And maybe try the local sausage speciality – Regensburger Bratwurst – at the famous Wurstkuchl near the stone bridge.

I visited here on a hot June day in 2013, just a few weeks after this whole area was hit by extreme flooding. Dedicated to my wonderful colleagues with me then and now, or who joined me since.

Castlebay Morning Light

I got up early for a walk and enjoyed the stunning views overlooking the natural bay and the beaches of neighbouring Vatersay beyond. The crystal-clear water glistened in the sun, creating a breathtaking sight. Just the birds, the sound of the waves and the breeze as an accompaniement. Capturing the essence of the Scottish Hebridean islands.

Colourful Canals of Old Amsterdam

The Dutch capital is an amazing city to visit. Jump on a tour boat or explore on foot and admire the maze of grachten – city canals – in the historic centre with its colourful architecture, bustling cafés, museums, art galleries and more. The grachtengordel or “canal belt” in Amersterdam is UNESCO listed, not surprisingly.

Tranquil Hebridean Dawn

I was up before dawn to visit the famous standing stones at Callanais and still had time before my well-earned full Scottish breakfast:-) So I headed up the coast and discovered this beautiful hamlet of Tolsta Chaolais nestled in the middle of nowhere.

The tranquility of a new day at Loch a’ Bhaile, as the sun gently rises over the calm waters, casting a mirror-like reflection of the surrounding Hebridean landscape – a scene that’s both peaceful and powerful, a testament to the wild beauty of Scotland’s remote islands. Caribbean Feeling

Pure paradise for snorkelling or swimming in the turquoise waters or chilling with a cocktail, the warm, golden sand between your toes.

The pretty beach at Playa Lagun in a small cove on the colourful island of Curaçao is often crowded at the weekend but during the week it is a peaceful haven. Dutch Caribbean.

Beautiful Bunnahabhain Beach

Well worth taking a stroll along the beautiful beach at Bunnahabhain (Tràigh Bun na h-Abhainne) for the stunning views across the Sound of Islay before popping in for a visit to the distillery of the same name nearby to sample the delicious golden amber.

On the Edge of the World

Or so it feels, when you look out over those turquoise Mediterranean waters and colossal cliffs from El Pilar de la Mola.

The charming Balearic Island of Formentera is only reachable by ferry from Ibiza or by your own private yacht:-) There is no airport.

But it is well worth it. Not just for this view from its highest plateau near the Mola lighthouse but for its amazing turquoise waters, gorgeous sandy beaches and its unique flair.

Peaceful Port Charlotte Dawn

I stood on the small beach near the harbour and enjoyed a peaceful moment just before the sun came up.

A small fishing boat is anchored nearby in the golden, calm waters of Loch Indaal, while the Paps of Jura mountains on the neighbouring island form a silhouette in the distance.

Window Seat View

Back in the day I flew almost every week and my faithful Nikon D200 went with me in my handbag! I always tried to get a window seat. Sometimes with amazing views like this one. Sometimes it was cloudy or rainy – or I was over the wing:-( Once there wasn’t even a window!

Not so long ago when flying back to Germany from Edinburgh I was lucky enough to enjoy the late afternoon light reflecting on the North Sea with a wonderful smattering of tiny clouds far below. If you look carefully there is a tiny ship crossing too.

Castle on an Island

Kisimul Castle was built on a small island just off the coast from Castlebay on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra in medieval times.
If you ever fly from mainland Scotland to the famous beach airport on Barra you may be lucky to enjoy an aerial view too, as I did. More about the beach landing in another blog.

Pre-Dawn Light

Worth getting up early to enjoy the wonderful light of the beautiful blue hour shortly before the sun rose over the Sitia Peninsula. A perfect start to the new day. Imagine enjoying this view across Mirabello Bay from your balcony in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece.
