Discover Chania: A Fisherman’s Evening

I love visiting Crete and my ambition is to chat to the friendly people I meet in their own language. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to join a course to learn Greek in the historic town of Chania.

I stayed in an apartment overlooking the harbour in the Nea Chora district, with its family restaurants and sandy beach so I could soak up the scene and breathe in the fresh sea air.

One evening, I was walking back to my hotel as the sun began its descent towards the horizon, casting a warm glow over the rocky shore. I spotted a lone fisherman standing on the rocks, silhouetted against the mesmerising backdrop offshore islands, a distant peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea.

Sahara Dust in the sky created a natural, golden filter. Just perfect in my photographer’s eyes.

It was so quiet, I could hear the waters gently lap at the shore below where I stood with my camera and tripod, adding a soft music to the serene and reflective atmosphere.

The fisherman’s figure, outlined by the fading light, seemed to symbolise the timeless connection between man and nature.
